Les Mains Guidées: How to 'Tit Fer

When: 05-Aug-2017 - 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Where: Performance Center

Vermilionville is continuing to host monthly workshops that will allow you to learn crafts from our master artisans. On the first Saturday of every month (unless noted otherwise), we will highlight a different craft from the old Acadian, Creole and Native American ways of life. Topics will range from woodcarving to textiles to foodways and many things in between.

During this workshop, Kevin Huval of the band ŒUVAL will be teaching waltz and two-step rhythms on Cajun music’s most iconic percussion instrument, the triangle. Class size is limited to 20 participants, and you must be registered in advance. Cost is $20 to participate, and you must have your own triangle; Vermilionville will have a limited number of $10 triangles made by its resident blacksmith for sale before the event. Take a break for lunch, and then stick around to try out your newly-learned skill at our weekly Cajun Jam from 1-3 p.m.! To register, click here.

ABOUT THE ARTISANS

The members of the ŒUVAL (pronounced Huval as in their last name) band dig deep into into their heritage and surroundings to bridge the traditional and modern and infuses their take on Cajun Creole music with attitude. Based out of Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, ŒUVAL is made up of an the extended and musical Huval clan of St. Martin Parish. Kevin Huval on vocals and guitar is joined by his sons, Joshua on accordion and Daniel on bass. Adding to the mix is Christian Lejeune on fiddle and Jimmy Breaux on drums.

The band’s first record, Racines en Fleurs, (Roots in Bloom) rings like a bell sounding the dawn of an era simultaneously familiar yet ancient. From traditional to pushing the envelope, ŒUVAL manages to imbue an earthiness and grit to their music. ŒUVAL is French music that surrounded us when we were growing up mixed in with attitude, driving beat and intense vocals that taken together inspire dance.
