Our initiative

Thank you for being an educator and for taking the time to utilize our site.

We strive to offer support and resources to educators and students through:

• SUPPORT via our Education Coordinator, Melanie Harrington, a highly qualified teacher and cultural anthropologist with experience in area schools who is available for classroom visits, teacher assistance with lesson plans, activities for students, and professional development. Contact Melanie by clicking here.

• LESSON PLANS that are standards based for both elementary and secondary classrooms. These lessons can be adapted for use independently or in conjunction with a visit to Vermilionville. Click here to view our lesson plans.

• PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT opportunities through meaningful and relevant workshops for teachers. To receive notification of these free opportunities, contact our Education Coordinator by clicking here.

• FIELD TRIPS that are both meaningful and immersive, within our living history village. During a cultural excursion to Vermilionville, students can step back in time, entering homes and buildings filled with artifacts from our focal time period of 1765 to 1890, interacting with traditional artisans in period clothing practicing their crafts. To find out more information on field trips, click here.

• COMMUNITY COLLABORATION on innovative educational projects with support from local, state and national partners.

For more information, please contact our Melanie Harrington, Education Coordinator at 337-233-4077 ext. 206 or education@bayouvermiliondistrict.org.

Our educational projects are made possible through support from the National Endowment of the Arts, Louisiana Office of Cultural Development, Local Learning, Acadiana Center for the Arts, Richard Guidry Foundation, University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Center for Louisiana Studies, Lafayette Parish School System, Acadiana Community Media, George Rodrigue Foundation and the Vermilionville Living History Museum Foundation.
